Better Security through Software

One of the best defenses against security threats is a good offense, and we want to help you take the offensive by having the latest security software installed on your computer. Today, we are announcing a year-long partnership with McAfee to offer all 350 million people who use Facebook the ability to download a six-month subscription to McAfee security software at no cost, along with a special discount once the six months are over.

You can take advantage of this offer by visiting the Protect Your PC tab on the McAfee Page on Facebook.

We're committed to doing everything we can to help you protect your account and make your experience on Facebook as safe and enjoyable as possible. We invest in dedicated teams and advanced technical systems that detect and block suspicious behavior. When we find a message with a link to a fake login page or other malicious website, we prevent it from being sent and delete all instances of it from the site. We also work with third parties to get malicious sites added to browser blacklists or removed completely.

For the rare case in which an account is compromised, we've developed a unique process that requires the account owner to take steps to secure the account and learn security best practices. We've also incorporated custom McAfee software into this process for people identified as having infected computers. Now, if your computer is infected, you will be asked to run a scan like the one shown below and clean it before accessing Facebook. We're not aware of another free Internet service that takes this much responsibility for helping people keep their accounts secure.

We have a lot of control over security measures on Facebook. However, we don't control other websites and services you visit that might infect your computer. For this reason, we recommend that you install updated security software, which you can now do at no cost through this partnership, and that you always follow these safe practices:

  • Don't open attachments in emails that look suspicious or come from an unknown or untrustworthy source.

  • Don't open attachments unless you know what they are, even if they're from friends.

  • Delete chain mail and spam from your email and Facebook inboxes.

  • Be cautious when downloading files from the Internet.

  • Be cautious of any message, post or link you see on Facebook that looks suspicious, requires an additional login, or asks you to download or upgrade software.

  • Use an up-to-date browser that features an anti-phishing blacklist. Some examples include Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.0.10.

  • Choose unique logins and passwords for each of the websites you use.

  • Check to see that you're logging in from a legitimate Facebook page with the facebook.com domain.

Become a fan of the Facebook Security Page to receive more tips, updates on the latest threats and other information to help you protect your computer and online accounts.

*Thanks The Facebook Blog

It's great to know that Facebook finally is taking care of Security problems. However, reading some people's comments it seems not everyone agrees with me; some of them prefer another softwares rather than McAffe.

What do you think of this Update?

Better Security through Software :: Comments

FWIW

On our own computers, each of us is entitled to use whatever security and protection methods we wish ( or none); that is called 'Freedom of Choice'.

However, with that 'freedom' comes 'accountability' and' user common-sense'( and the latter is , sadly, from my experience ,often rather lacking )
Maybe Facebook is concerned about the how many thousands of its members who do not use any antivirus protection?

Have they ever done a survey to ask ?

One may wonder how many of this forum's members do not have any computer protection....

I was waiting for your opinion about this, ruby, you seem to be an expert in Computer Safety.

Have they ever done a survey to ask ?

Couldn't agree more. They never even asked for people's opinion.

One may wonder how many of this forum's members do not have any computer protection....

To protect my computer I have AVG.

By the way, ruby, is McAffe a good Safery Software or not?

Nice find, looks like I finally score a free Mcafee Very Happy

Listener, as for if McAffee as a good protection, overall its good, but there is better, yet MacAfee is continually improving and is sitting around about the 5th-ish best paid AV out there, and it recently took a tool, and is now bouncing back, according to CNET.com's downloads center.

McAffee is good, far better than AVG's paid & free version combined, though AVG does ahve the great capeability to hog your computer resources when your in a rush, which is really a bad idea, but it's upside is it's AVG Toolbar, which is quite interactive, as you most likely already know if your a paid user.

Personally, I use Avast! because it provides everything that is paid for, in a free version, just the paid version has automated updates, where as the free version doesn't have automated updates.
Good deal to me, especually seeing as it's a AV & Anti-spyware in 1

Personally, I'm going to download this free McAfee freeby tomorrow morning when im more alert, and set it as a On-Demand only, rather than my primary protection, as avast and/or mcafee will 'play with fire' so to speak, and then I would just disable mcafee, seeing as avast has saved my arse alot.

According to a google search , at today's date of posting this ,these are the

>>Top ten antivirus programs<<

You will note

Antivirus software is must-have protection. This review picks the best antivirus software based on its virus detection abilities, features, and breadth of protection. Whether you're seeking total system coverage or an ala carte solution, each of the following products provides superb virus protection for Windows-based PCs. Because every system is unique, evaluate several of Windows XP and Windows Vista antivirus scanners to find the software best suited for your PC and your level of experience.

You need to use a program you are happy with and not what someone tries to tell you you must have

( conversely I do have a list of not to be recommended antivirus program but that is not the remit of this thread .....and, as to me seeming to be 'an expert in Computer safety'?? I do what I can to help others to keep their computers clean ,as it is far easier to keep a computer clean than to clean it once an infection has gotten hold of it ...not all infections can be removed-----you just have to look through some of the HJT forums to see that )

As to this MacAffee offer? If Facebook members do chose to take it up, they will need to see what their current antivirus program is and how it can be safely removed from their computer as, as we do know ( don't we !!) you should not have more than one Resident antivirus program on your computer; if you do you will doubtless get infected

So, if member do take up this offer they have also that point to think about...plus

did they pay for their present package and what will they do about that ???

I think McAffe paid Facebook to advertise.

By the way, I noticed McAffe is #3 so actually it is a good Software.

The whole thing is a bit ironic

you need to read the content for yourself as it does say it IS copyrighted
