When it comes to viewing photos, we think bigger is better. The Facebook Team begun increasing the maximum size for photos on Facebook by almost 20 percent to 720 pixels to give you higher quality photos and make viewing them more enjoyable.

You'll start to notice the larger size as you upload new photos to Facebook or browse new photo albums from your friends. Older photos will remain in the previous maximum size of 604 pixels.

Students who fear that spending too much time on social media sites will affect their academic performance can breathe easy, according to a new study.

Conducted by WSBE professor Chuck Martin and his marketing research class, the study found that there was no correlation between grades students receive and the amount of time spent on sites such as Facebook or Youtube.

“We broke down usage by minutes during a typical day,” said Martin, with light users being logged onto a social media site for fewer than 31 minutes per day and heavy users on for a time exceeding...

This afternoon Facebook announced a partnership with PayPal in which users can now pay for their Facebook Credits using the payment provider. Since rumors first began about the expansion of Facebook Credits, many assumed that it would eventually become a direct competitor to PayPal. Today’s announcement suggests that this is not the case.

Instead, Facebook will continue to integrate Facebook Credits into their...

If you’ve tried searching for someone on Facebook in the past 24 hours, there’s a good chance you didn’t find them. The reason is that Facebook’s people search functionality hasn’t been working. While we don’t know when the problem will be resolved, we’re sure this is a big problem considering that most people search for other users on Facebook regularly.

Many users have been reporting the issue to us which we first noticed yesterday evening....

Facebook’s instant message service, Chat, has been live on other sites for more than a year. But now the company is officially announcing that it is available to use within third-party IM clients, and within other IM services. AOL’s AIM is one example, as we covered earlier today.

Like Google does with Gtalk, Facebook is using the Jabber (XMPP) open messaging protocol. So any client that supports...

Facebook has been having a few platform reliability issues over the past 48 hours, but the latest hits Facebook’s “Live Status” page which lets developers know the status of the platform. Navigating to the Live Status page currently returns an error which says “This webpage is not available.” While I’m sure Facebook is working to get the site back up quickly, it has been down for at least 10 minutes.

While there’s no information to suggest that...

Facebook is the largest photo-sharing site with over 2.5 billion photos uploaded to Facebook each month. In order to make sharing photos even easier, today we are announcing a new and improved photo uploader.

Recently we've received feedback that people struggle with our current photo uploader due to various technical issues, while others are confused by the installation process. In this new version of the photo uploader, we have solved many of those problems and developed a fast, stable and simple experience for sharing photos on Facebook.

The new uploader will be rolling...

Today, Facebook celebrates the 6th anniversary of the launch of Facebook. While the exact date of the founding is not exactly clear (since Mark Zuckerberg and eventually the co-founders were hard at work developing the site before it launched) it marks a major milestone for the company which grew from a dorm room to one the world’s largest communication tools, reaching over 375 million users every month.

Two more developers have praised Apple's new iPad, saying that criticism of the device's limitations are missing a trick.
Joe Hewitt used to be Facebook's iPhone developer, before moving jobs after publicly slamming Appple's app approval process.
That approvals process remains intact for iPad, but Hewitt is nonetheless hugely excited, according to his latest blog post.
"I felt strongly that all Apple needed to do to revolutionize computing was simply to make an iPhone with a large screen," he writes.
"Anyone who feels underwhelmed by that doesn't understand how...

Nearly two thirds (60 percent) of businesses believe social network Facebook poses the biggest threat to security, says Sophos.

Research by the security firm for its Security Threat 2010 report revealed that MySpace was voted second with 18 percent, closely followed by Twitter with 17 percent of votes.

Only 4 percent named LinkedIn as a security threat.

"Facebook is by far the largest social network - and you'll find more bad apples in the biggest orchard," said Graham Cluely from Sophos in a blog.

Cluely added that the security team at Facebook...

We live in an ever connected society and Facebook is leading the way with those connections. Today we’ve learned that Drew Barrymore has announced her engagement using Facebook as her first choice of sharing that info with her friends, families and millions of fans.
Barrymore announced her engagement to fiancé Justin Long, the star of Apple’s “I’m a Mac” series of ads, who also starred along Bruce Willis in the last Die Hard movie, which btw freaked me out as I watched the “Mac” guy use PC’s to thwart super hackers.
Drew and Justin have been dating for quite some time now. Although there’s...

A second convicted murderer has been caught using Facebook to keep the world up to date with his life inside.

Colin Gunn, 42, is serving 35 years for conspiracy to murder Joan and John Stirland.

But despite this, he has had a Facebook profile for the last two months. The page was regularly updated leading to suspicion that he was using a mobile phone rather than getting friends to update it for him.

Gunn said on the site: “Good news from seeing the security governor, he said he had no problem with me blogging. I’ve provided him with all of the up-to-date laws on...

It seems the world's largest user of PHP -- itself the Internet's most popular programming language -- has decided to build and compile its own version to speed up its operation. Facebook, which has over 350 million users, is due to announce its changes this week, but speculative rumors are bouncing all over the place!

The SD Times suggests that a new in-house runtime was built -- the bit of software that executes the PHP code -- but the commenters suggest otherwise: they just think it's a 'pre-compiler' type tool. Basically, PHP is compiled at execute time -- when you visit a page on...

A Facebook page devoted to missing mom Susan Powell has disappeared, and now her family and friends are asking the social networking site to restore the page.

he Facebook page contained information and an extensive photo gallery of Susan Powell, a 28-year-old mother of two from Puyallup who moved to Utah with her husband Joshua after their marriage.

Susan was last seen Dec. 6, 2009, by her husband at their home in West Valley, Utah. He told police he saw her just before he took their two young children on a midnight camping trip in snowy conditions. When they got back, he...

After years of trying to come up with a half decent revenue model to justify its billions of dollars of “worth”, it seems Facebook is turning to agriculture to make some moolah. And when we say agriculture, we mean, of course, Farmville.

The Bugsy Malone execs at Facebook have had something of an epiphany when it comes to users’ daily transactions with the Mafia for fertilizer and dairy cows, and have come up with a "Pay with Facebook" model which could potentially pay off big time.

Zynga, makers of both Farmville and Mafia Wars, has somehow managed to suck in some...

You may be able to amass thousands of friends on Facebook, but how many of them are really your friends? Probably around 150.

Robin Dunbar, professor of Evolutionary Anthropology, has found that the human brain is capable of maintaining only 150 friendships--and social networking sites haven't changed that. From studying Neolithic societies to present-day networking, Dunbar has found that people tend to self-organize in groups of around 150. After that, social unity begins to weaken.

"The interesting thing is that you can have 1,500 friends, but when you actually look...

It looks like 2010 will be a strong year for IPOs, especially for tech offerings. Of course, one of the most highly-anticipated deals is Facebook. No doubt, it would give the market a big jolt.

But sadly, it looks like we may have to wait. At a conference in Munich, Facebook's two largest investors -- Jim Breyer of Accel Partners and Yuri Milner of Digital Sky Technologies (DST) -- said "no" to an IPO in 2010.

Why? Basically, Facebook wants to be as ready as possible. This means continuing to build its team, technologies and user base. Facebook also plans...

Like several bazillion other users, I like using Facebook to keep tabs on what my friends are up to. What I don't like is the endless stream of "so-and-so took this quiz" and "Joe became friends with Jane" messages and "What Kind of Jedi Are You?" come-ons.

That's why I just became a fan of Facebook Purity, a browser add-on that removes those annoying quiz and application notifications from your Facebook home page. The effects are subtle--don't expect a major makeover--but definitely worthwhile.

Facebook Purity is actually a script that requires...

Researchers and reporters both know one thing – if you want people to sit up and take notice, take the most popular technology of the day and somehow link it to some horrible illness or social calamity. Because Facebook and Twitter are at the top of everyone’s minds these days, these social networking sites have become the root of all evil in the world, judging by the headlines.

Such ridiculous claims are often reported and re-reported (yes, even here at Network World) as if they are fact; meanwhile, there may be a germ of truth in there that gets buried. Here are some of the worst offenders.

It’s one of Facebook’s most significant changes to the Facebook Platform since it first launched almost three years ago: developer access to user emails. It’s a major milestone in Facebook’s continued opening of the platform. This latest step, schedule to take place next Wednesday, January 20, is a technique adapted from the OpenID authentication protocol. While developers are anticipating access to user emails for obvious reasons, some developers are concerned about what the impact will be.

One of the easiest ways to stay updated on relevant conversations happening on Facebook is through email notifications, which inform you about comments made on the posts you've created or commented on. These notifications—for comments on such content as status updates, photos, videos and Wall posts—allow you to stay informed about your Facebook friends' activities without being logged in when you're on the go, on your phone or at work.

Today, we're launching the ability for you to participate in these conversations by replying directly to these email notifications....

They are spending £125 for blocks of 1,000 friends on Facebook and Twitter.
The virtual friends are being sold by a small Australian company called uSocial.
Leon Hill, its 24-year-old chief executive, reported a surge of inquiries about his service over Christmas.
He told The Sun: "Social networking sites can be cruel if you're unloved – they show exactly how popular you are.
"People are buying pals so they have more mates to chat to, rather than sitting alone on their PCs."
However, many claim the service abuses the principles of social networking sites.

As more people discover that I've switched off the social networks I'm getting quite a spectrum of response. I've certainly noticed a couple of colleagues look at me like I've gone off the deep end but many folks have dropped by my office to confess that they, too, have wondered about taking the plunge.

I'm still here, I assure them, and still very present online. It's not like I threw out my cell phone and stopped checking e-mail. (Although someone did suggest that as a possibility - to truly go off the grid one day. I don't think I'm quite ready for that yet.) But they have this look...
